A Hidden Gem in the Alps: Exploring Reutte, Austria

Reutte, Austria, might just be the most beautiful place I’ve ever visited! I discovered this charming alpine town while searching for accommodations near Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany. With most places near the castle either sold out or far beyond my budget, I stumbled upon Reutte—a picturesque ski village just 30 minutes away by bus.

Since I visited during the summer, Reutte was in its off-season, with some businesses closed for the quieter months. Yet, the town still exuded a magical charm, making it a perfect retreat.

A Cozy Stay at Hotel zum Mohren

I booked a room at Hotel zum Mohren, a delightful family-run hotel that exceeded my expectations. The mother and father of the family run the hotel and its restaurant, while their son manages the bar. Even their golden retriever adds a warm, homely touch by lounging in the dining room.

The hotel offers fantastic amenities, including an indoor heated pool, a sauna, and a serene quiet room. Each evening, I found myself unwinding in the spa before returning to my cozy room, where fluffy terry cloth robes and stunning views of Reutte awaited me.

Dining at the hotel restaurant was an absolute treat. On my first night, I indulged in truffle risotto topped with goat cheese, paired with a glass of wine. Surrounded by the hum of German conversations, the ambiance felt nothing short of magical. This stop truly brought the “bougie” to Bougie Backpacker.

A Day on the Hahnenkamm

My one full day in Reutte was spent exploring the Hahnenkammbahn Höfen gondola. After a scenic 45-minute walk through town, I arrived at the gondola station. During the summer, the gondola whisks visitors to the top of Hahnenkamm, a mountain known for its picturesque huts and extensive hiking trails. From the summit, the views of Reutte and the Tannheimer Tal Valley are absolutely breathtaking.

The moment I stepped off the gondola, I was greeted by incredible alpine vistas, grazing milk cows, and a quaint pond surrounded by a walking path. I spent the morning wandering along several hiking trails, each offering stunning panoramas. One trail, in particular, led me to a viewpoint so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. It was one of those rare moments when nature’s beauty leaves you speechless. I sat on a bench at the summit, snapping a few photos before putting away my phone to fully savor the experience.

Lunch with a View

After my hikes, I made my way to Panoramarestaurant Hahnenkamm. I was lucky to find a seat on their expansive patio, which overlooks the mountain slopes and the town below. The restaurant sources its dairy from the very cows roaming the mountain, adding a local touch to their dishes. I opted for a comforting bread and cheese plate paired with a delicious bowl of tomato soup—a perfect meal to cap off a perfect morning of hiking.

Exploring Reutte’s Charm

Returning to Reutte in the afternoon, I spent time leisurely exploring the town. I popped into a few shops, enjoyed a cup of coffee, and reflected on the unforgettable experiences of the day. Reutte’s quiet charm and stunning alpine setting make it a destination worth savoring.

Next Stop: Füssen and Neuschwanstein Castle

The adventure continues tomorrow with a day trip to Füssen, Germany, and the iconic Neuschwanstein Castle. But for now, Reutte holds a special place in my heart as one of the most enchanting destinations I’ve ever encountered.
