I LOVE books! The smell of a library filled with old books, ah nothing compares. Where else can you go and travel to different countries, time periods, or a fantasy land where anything is possible?
When I first started planning for my European adventure I came across The Long Room at Trinity College Library in Dublin. There is a rumor that Harry Potter was either filmed here or that Trinity Library was the inspiration for the Hogwarts library. These rumors have either been denied or unproven but I can see why Potterheads believe this! The Long Room contains around 200,000 of the world’s oldest books!
Understandably, you are not allowed to touch the books however, you can explore the books on display around the room. There are also busts of various famous people that line the rows of beautiful books. The entire experience is a book lover’s dream!
I am so excited about the books that I got ahead of myself. When you first enter the library you are immersed on a self guided tour of The Old Library. You will learn the history of the Book of Kells, dating back to the 9th Century and contains the four gospels from the New Testament, crafted by Celtic Monks around 800.
Once you are through the exhibit you will enter a room where the Book of Kells is kept. I am not a religious person but viewing a book from around 800 is an incredible experience. You are not allowed to take pictures of the book but are able to walk 360° around the display. I tried to take my time and take in the beauty of seeing a book that old.
After you leave the Book of Kells there is a black walkway you go through before you enter The Long Room where all the beautiful books are kept. On the wall is the quote:
“I have always imagined that paradise will be a kind of library.”
– Jorge Luis Borges
Tears start to prick at my eyes as I round the corner and take in the beauty of this room. I am told that part of the shelves are empty as they are preserving the books and working on some updates but even with books missing I know I am in the happiest place in Ireland!
To round out the best day, after my tour I make my way to St. Stephen’s Green Park and join the locals reading in the park. The weather is perfect to lay in the grass and enjoy a few chapters in my book. If you are a reader or just love history I highly recommend a visit to Trinity College Library.
Today’s helpful tips!
The Book of Kells Experience
It looks like as of January 2024 visiting the Book of Kells and Trinity College Library is an Experience and not just a self guided tour. Check out everything they have to offer here.
Purchase Tickets Ahead of Time.
I tried to walk up one day but they were sold out; however, tickets were available for the next day.
Download the App
This is helpful for the self guided tour. Don’t forget to bring your headphones! The app and self guided tour are free so no need to purchase ahead of time but I would download over WiFi before you head out for the day. Get the app here!
Pack a Towel/Blanket
I highly recommend relaxing in the park, The Only Towel You Need, is a great addition to your packing list. It folds up great and makes the best picnic blanket.
